Distribution of the surname in England - 1881

The three maps below show the two most common spellings of the surname at the time of the 1881 census which was taken on 3rd April of that year.  The first map shows Rowlatt, the second Rowlett, and the third a combined total.  This latter total is the more accurate figure since the spelling varied according to the whim of the enumerator, from census to census, and even in some instances, from child to child in the same family!

Eventually I hope to make these sorts of figures available for all censuses taken from 1841 up to and including 1901.  All the maps have been created with GenMapUK, and reproduced here with the kind permission of Archer Software who created and supplied the software.

Rowlatt - 1881 census
