Introduction
Welcome to my one-name study website, covering the surname Rowlatt and all its variant spellings. I first got involved with studying the surname when my mother asked me to trace her father's family, and very soon I began to realise that the name, spelt as Rowlatt, was in fact quite uncommon. When I got stuck with a baptism which seemed to have vanished into a black hole somewhere, I started looking at variant spellings of the name (including Rowlett, Rowlat and Rowlet to name but a few), and started to make contact with other family historians, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Once I began to get more involved with research into the name and its origins, I decided to register with the Guild of One-Name Studies, and the help and support of the other members, and their vast reservoir of knowledge has proved invaluable to me.
There is a book called 'The Rowlatts - An Infinite Variety', written by Mary Emmeline Rowlatt, which was privately published in 1975. I was extremely fortunate in being able to borrow a copy from Mary's family, and found it contained a wealth of information, not only about her own family line, but also about the general history of the name and some possible origins. I wish to publicly thank Mary's family for allowing me to not only borrow the book, but to make use of some of the information contained therein. In certain areas it has saved me vast amounts of time and effort. The earliest reference I have found to the Rowlatt name appears in this book c.1208 during the reign of King John, where the name of Roelet is listed in the Curia Regis Rolls for Hampshire.
I hope there will be something of interest for all Rowlatt researchers contained in these pages, and indeed I have far more information available than I can put on the website, so if what you are looking for is not here, please contact me and I will do my best to help you.
If you are a Rowlatt, or are researching the name in any way at all, I would love to hear from you.
